Cluster

Cluster is a network of eight contemporary visual art organisations located in residential areas situated on the peripheries of European cities, extending to the Middle East with one member in Holon, Israel. Each organisation is focused on commissioning, producing, and presenting contemporary art, and the nature of the work is often experimental, process-driven, involves research, is based on working with international and local artists, and often engages with diverse publics on a local level. Each organisation is actively involved in their local contexts and all are committed to embedding themselves within their surroundings.

The members of Cluster are: CAC Brétigny, Brétigny s/Orge, France; CA2M Centro Dos De Mayo, Madrid, Spain; Casco – Office for Art Design and Theory, Utrecht, The Netherlands; Les Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers, Aubervilliers, France; Tensta Konsthall, Stockholm, Sweden; The Israeli Center for Digital Art, Holon, Israel; The Showroom, London, UK; Zavod P.A.R.A.S.I.T.E., Ljubljana. Slovenia

Cluster has the goal of facilitating knowledge exchange in relation to how the organisations operate within their local contexts. During 2012–2013 the group collectively visited each of the organisations in the network in order to look closely at the ways in which they operate in relation to their respective localities. Each visit included a combination of closed meetings, site visits and public events, through which ongoing dialogues could be generated and shared.

In 2014 Cluster: Dialectionary was published with the aim of finding new ways to position this work and the work of contemporary visual arts organisations more broadly, particularly in relation to wider social, political and cultural concerns.
