Jithinlal N R

Jithinlal N R is from Kerala and is now based in Vadodara, India.

His paintings and drawings engage with the difficulties of representing complexity visually, often focusing on the representation of oppressed and marginalised communities in his native India. Through material investigation, he engages with his direct surroundings, examining how societal structures impact upon ideas, identities and aesthetics.

From April-June 2018 Jithinlal N R is on a residency at Gasworks, undertaking research on the British black arts movement and the BLK Art Group, continuing his examination of underrepresentation and marginalisation in art and society in a new context. Based on this research, he will produce a new series of drawings, imaging new and hybrid forms of representation that push back against established value systems.

Jithinlal N R completed his MVA in painting in 2013 at MSU Baroda. Specialising in painting, he also designs and illustrates for a bi-monthly publication The Baroda Pamphlet.

Recent exhibitions include A Dark Place in the Sun, 2017, Knots, Vadodara; Lalithkala Academy Regional Exhibition, 2014, Chennai Lalithkala Regional Centre; and Resist, Re-interpret, Re-construct, Re-contextualise, 2014, Faculty of Fine Arts Gallery, MSU, Baroda, India.
