Visual Cultures As… Launch Party

Wednesday 5 February 2014, 7–10pm

Opening remarks by Isaac Julien followed by a panel discussion with Gavin Butt, Jorella Andrews, Lynn Turner, Astrid Schmetterling, Simon O’Sullivan, and Irit Rogoff. Drinks will then be served and music played by Mark Fisher and Kodwo Eshun.

Visual Cultures As… is a new book series published by Sternberg Press.

The series of short, co-authored paperbacks is just one dimension of the work academics in the Department have been carrying out. Each title interrogates a single, pertinent topic from divergent perspectives using the simple, and accessible, format of two essays and a conversation.

Dr Jorella Andrews, Series Editor and academic in the Department of Visual Cultures, commented: ‘At Goldsmiths we have been enthusiastically researching, teaching, and promoting the new field of Visual Cultures since the late 1990s. The aims of the series is to help make Visual Cultures accessible to wider audiences and to demonstrate the relevance of artistic, academic and curatorial activities in this area to contemporary social, cultural, and political concerns. We hope the books provide inspiration and promote debate.’

The first three books published in this series are Visual Cultures as… Seriousness by Gavin Butt and Irit Rogoff; Visual Cultures as… Recollection by Astrid Schmetterling and Lynn Turner; and Visual Cultures as… Objects and Affects by Jorella Andrews and Simon O’Sullivan.
