Can the UK rebuild its coral reefs? Continuing our exploration of the ocean and its futures, London-based artist Miyuki Kasahara will lead a clay workshop focusing on the UK’s coral reefs.
Inspired by the film Hyena Lullaby (2020) by Taloi Havini and Michael Toisuta, currently featured in our exhibition Oceanic Visions / Moana te kite the artist will introduce the little-known cold-water coral reefs living primarily off the west coasts of Scotland and Ireland. The Lophelia pertusa reef has been heavily damaged by bottom trawling, pollution, and climate change.
In this workshop, you will create Lophelia coral sculptures with clay while listening to sounds of the reef and ocean, and learning about Kasahara’s latest research, including ways to take action and help rebuild the coral.
About the artist
Miyuki Kasahara is a London-based artist whose work and research address the impact of humans on the ecosystem. She explores how we can reconnect with a diminishing relationship to the natural world and stop poisoning it - and ourselves. Using sculpture, drawing, film, and participatory installations, she addresses themes from ecological crisis to the socio-political dynamics shaping our world.
